A Description of What is a Spinet Piano

  • A piano with an upright rectangular body and with its strings running vertically
  • The spinet piano, also known as the vertical piano. The top of the piano comes just a few inches above the keys, and the action is located below, operated by vertical wires that are attached to the backs of the keys.
  • A spinet piano is less then 40 inches, in this style of instrument, the action sits directly on top of the keys, with smaller hammers and the strings stretching downward.
  • This size piano is more desirable, not only for its size (more soundboard) but also because the direct blow action is more efficient and responsive to the player’s touch.
  • Spinet pianos are a great option for those with limited space. They’re also typically more inexpensive than their larger counterparts.
  • Some piano technicians charge more money to work on spinets because they consider them more challenging to repair. There are many more working parts in a spinet piano than a console. So take great of your spinet.

Preventative Maintenance and Longevity
Upright pianos may cost more than a Console and Spinet. Be sure to:

  • Schedule a tuning at least once per year
  • Avoid placing your piano direct sunlight or near fireplaces, radiators, or other items that extrude fluctuating levels of heat or humidity
  • It helps to have a Dehumidifier unit installed
  • Feather dust or use specialty piano-cleaning products
  • Never keep liquids on or near the piano
