A Description of What is a Upright Piano

  • A piano with an upright rectangular body and with its strings running vertically
  • The upright piano, also known as the vertical piano, appeared toward the later part of the 19th century. The strings are mounted vertically, as opposed to the grand. Upright pianos are commonplace for use in the home as they occupies much less space and produce ample volume for the living room.
  • A upright piano is between 44 inches and over, tall and is similar to a console piano, with a slightly different feel and location of the action. A upright features a full-size action sitting directly on the keys.
  • Is often what we see in schools, churches, and teaching studios. More soundboard area and string length.
  • They usually have toe blocks to support the front legs rather than having the front legs free-standing (which are more likely to get caught in the carpet and broken in a move). The added height of the studio piano gives it a richness and tonal character comparable to those of many grand pianos.

Preventative Maintenance and Longevity
Upright pianos may cost more than a Console and Spinet. Be sure to:

  • Schedule a tuning at least once per year
  • Avoid placing your piano direct sunlight or near fireplaces, radiators, or other items that extrude fluctuating levels of heat or humidity
  • It helps to have a Dehumidifier unit installed
  • Feather dust or use specialty piano-cleaning products
  • Never keep liquids on or near the piano
