A Description of What is a Grand Piano
- The grand piano offers a wide dynamic range, rich resonance, diverse tonality, and responsive touch. Only when all of these features are combined are pianists able to fully convey the rich sound expression that composers incorporate into their works.
- A grand piano is a large full-toned piano which has strings that are set horizontally to the ground, a soundboard arranged horizontally as well and in line with the keys and is supported by three legs.
- Grand pianos are used especially for giving concerts and making recordings.
- The cabinet size of a Grand ranges from the smallest is under 6ft ((also known as a Baby Grand)), the middle sizes 6ft to 7ft ((also known as a Classic Grand)), to the largest which is over 7ft ((also known as a Concert Grand)).
Preventative Maintenance and Longevity
Grand pianos may cost more than a vehicle. Be sure to:
- Schedule a tuning at least once per year
- Avoid placing your piano direct sunlight or near fireplaces, radiators, or other items that extrude fluctuating levels of heat or humidity
- It helps to have a Dehumidifier unit installed
- Feather dust or use specialty piano-cleaning products
- Never keep liquids on or near the piano
